Over the past few years, interest groups such as Midwives Alliance of North America, and Friends of MI Midwives, have pushed for legislation regarding midwifery. At first glance, consumers might be tempted to believe that attempts at licensing for midwives would be a positive change, especially when these interest groups proclaim that legislation is about safety.
The problem lies in the pervasive loopholes that are purposefully written into proposed bills, many of which protect midwives themselves instead of the families they serve. While appropriate licensing may be a good start, there is much more to improving safety than licensing alone.
