How to Find A Safe Midwife
The best way to ensure you are hiring a safe midwife is to find one who works within a collaborative care model at a hospital or a hospital affiliated birth center. These midwives will be highly educated , licensed , and insured . They will be working within a system of checks and balances, and will have the best back-up immediately available should an emergency arise.
It is also important to know the status and history of any licensed care provider. You can click on this link to Verify a License and look for previous sanctions or disciplianry action.
**Note: CNMs are the only type of licensed midwife at present in the state of MI. There is currently no way to verify the past performance or disciplinary action for CPMs, DEMs, or Lay Midwives in our state.
If you are seeking an out-of-hospital birth, the task of finding a midwife who practices safely can feel daunting. Here's a printable checklist that may help you know what questions to ask to learm more about potential candidates:

**Please note that these questions do not ensure safety, and that if you are choosing an out-of-hospital birth, you are doing so with inherently more risk to you and your baby based on proximity to emergency care alone. This is especially true at present in the state of MI where we have few, if any licensed, insured, AMCB certified midwives working outside hospitals. We hope this changes, but at present, the risks should be forthcoming for families considering out-of-hospital birth.
